Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is a dark fantasy action-horror neo-noir film. It is a continuation to the German folklore fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel", in which Hansel and Gretel are now grown up and working as witch hunter duo.

Plot

It has started with the original story of Hansel and Gretel being abandoned by their father and lost to the forest. They found a house full of chocolates and candies but was caught by a witch. The witch tried to fatten Hansel by feeding him chocolate. They tried to escape but were unable to. They struggled until they were able to burn and kill the witch.

They trained and became witch exterminator for hire duo as they grow old. They became popular in almost all communities.
One day, Hansel and Gretel prevent Sheriff Berringer from executing Mina, a young woman incorrectly indicted of witchcraft. Mayor Englemann hired the two to find and rescue several children taken by witches. At the same time, Berringer hires four trackers for the similar mission, wanting to redeem the trust of the Mayor.

The siblings found out that the witches are preparing for the Blood Moon and are still needing one more girl to complete 12 needed for the ritual. The witches attacked the town, successfully took the targeted girl.

On their way to the mission to rescue the girl, Mina revealed that she is a white witch. She blessed the siblings’ weapons and helped them hunt and kill the witch.

Review

Warning: Definitely not for kids. This is a gory version and child memory ruining film. It centered on witch hunt rather than the known German folklore version the world knew.

The film is action-packed re-invented children movie meant for grownups who love watching witch films. Gory and bloody scene are undeniably not for those who have weak stomach or heart.

Characters are well-portrayed. Hansel and Gretel are totally different from the original story. Politics and ambitions of Sheriff add to the struggle in the story. Appearances of witches, however, are typical to that other witches film. Only the Grand Witch Muriel made the look of witches different from the other.

Sound effects backed up the fighting and chasing scenes or it drive out more people on watching this scary film.
