Travel Time: Paoay Church, Ilocos Norte

WORTH A VISIT. St Augustine Church of Paoay, Ilocos Norte or simply called as Paoay Church is known as one of the oldest Roman Catholic churches in Ilocos Norte and in the whole Philippines. This is only one of the few churches in the country that survived destructive earthquakes and disastrous catastrophes in the long history of Spanish, American and Japanese colonialism, and after independence from different foreign powers.

Paoay Church is cited as one of the many places in the Philippines as 'world heritage sites' by UNESCO or United Nation Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. An acknowledgement by UNESCO is considered as prestige and it is also an honor to the Filipinos for maintaining historical structure of Paoay Church.

St. Augustine Church is a combination of Baroque and Spanish architecture. Tourist may be amazingly captivated to see one of the oldest and few remaining Baroque architectures in the Philippines. With its beautiful and well maintained structures, the Paoay Church is both a place for Catholic Christian activity and a tourist destination.

Historically, Baroque architecture had an encouragement coming from the Roman Catholic Church and it became the foundation of how churches must be built and how it will look. Interiors, facades and even small details are of Baroque architectures.

The church design of Paoay Church is one of the evidences that the Spanish influence had managed to instill to the Filipinos the religiosity of the Roman Catholic Church.  Residents in Paoay proudly say that architectural design of the church can actually influence and/or set the mood of the churchgoers to concentrate on talking to God through prayer. Sundays and other weekdays are well attended by local devotees during scheduled Mass celebrations.

  2. KAhit lumang-luma na yung Paoay church andun pa rin yung detail at yung original na anyo niya. di tulad ng mga church ngaun na napinturahan na at napalitan na ang itsura. sana madami pang historical churches ang ipreserve ang itsura katulad nito.

they should continue to preserve this one of the few remaining significant Spanish heritages in the Philippines.

Paoay Church is a tourist place in the Philippines that is worth visiting especially if you are religious.
