2013 Top Ten News of the Year

2013 ended with both good news and bad news. For some it is a round year but for the others, it is a great year. 




The year 2013 ended with a bang or two and pretty hard news, too.

Sadly or happily, the year ends with unexpected things. Usually, unexpected things happen the way we expect it.

The year 2013 is full of controversies and intrigues. The year also gave good news which we would like to remember for a reason. 2013 is not unlucky year. In fact, it is a lucky year for everybody who does good everytime. If it is unlucky, blame no one. Situations, be it bad or good, will always occur.

Top 10 News of the Year: Boxing Revenge

Our boxers won convincingly against their opponents in their respective comeback fights after their shocking losses.

Nonito Donaire came in first with a win against Vic Darchinyan. He won a ninth round knockout against Darchinyan in a non-title bout.

Manny Pacquiao won intensely against his American opponent, Brandon Rios. The Philippine boxing hero got the WBO International Welterweight belt after Pacman made Rios a punching bag for 12 rounds.


Top 9 News of the Year: Shocking Celebrity Sex Videos

Chito Miranda and his girlfriend' sex videos got leaked over the internet. Their sex videos became viral over the internet. There were two sex videos that were leaked in two separate occasions. The sex videos were leaked after Miranda's hard drive was stolen from their house.

Another who became infamous is Wally Bayola. Bayola is a comedian and a regular host of the popular noontime show, Eat Bulaga. HE got involved in a pre-marital sex with Yosh Rivera, a mainstay EB dancer of the same noon time show. Both got suspended in the show since Bayola is a married man and Eat Bulaga is a family-oriented show.


Top 8 News of the Year: Atimonan Shootout

The year 2013 opened with a fire in a police checkpoint in Atimonan, Quezon. 13 people who were said to be a gun for hire men were killed in Atimonan checkpoint. The controversial Col. Hansel Marantan was once again highlighted as center of another shootout.

The case is still unsolved as clock is ticking away this year. Whether it is a rub out, ambush or shootout, the case is seem to be taking long. Some doubt this case is between two colliding groups doing the same illegal activities.


Top 7 News of the Year: Taiwan-Philippine Rift

An old fisherman died after it allegedly entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Ten men were made liable of the killing after the investigation showed that the fisherman was still on the Taiwan’s territory.

The death of the Taiwanese made his country mad at the Overseas Filipino Workers working in Taiwan.

Reports of mauling were shown in different websites and social networks. The Philippine government made an apology for the incident.


Top 6 News of the Year: Year of Beauties

Beauty pageants were one of the dreams of some Filipinas. Winning is more than just a dream for those who joined. Combination of a dream and more than a dream is what we have witness this year.

Mutya Johanna Datul won the first title this year for the Philippines by grabbing the Miss Supranational 2013. This is the first title of the Philippines in the said international beauty pageant.

Megan Young, a young popular actress, grabs the second title for the Philippines by winning Miss World. This is the first Ms. World title won by the Philippines.

Ariella Arida, our Ms. Universe-Philippines and a fashion model, grabbed the third runner-up became another Philippine pride in international beauty pageants.

Bea Rose Santiago, an international fashion model, was crowned Miss International 2013 in Japan. She bested 66 other contestants from around the world who joined the one of the most coveted international beauty pageant.

Angeli Dione Gomez was crowned Miss Tourism International. This is the latest and the last title for the year. This is also the second consecutive title for the Philippines in this beauty pageant.


Top 5 News of the Year: Election 2013

Yes, election this year is just in the top 5 list. Same promises said in different lines were uttered during the election. Same tactics, same agendas and same good sweet words were uttered during the long period of campaign.

This is the year of Team PNoy and the UNA. Surveys and election results were almost the same. The only difference is the ranking. Tuwid na daan was still the main campaign tag of the Liberal-led coalition of Team PNoy.


Top 4 News of the Year: Zamboanga Siege

This is the most terrible thing happened done by men. The war in Zamboanga which was started by the Muslim rebels in Mindanao. Moro National Liberation Front tried to claim Zamboanga by marching with guns.

This led to government responding to the Muslim rebels. This war lasted for about a month.


Top 3 News of the Year: Bohol and Cebu Earthquake

Lives, houses and historical buildings were destroyed in an instant with a magnitude 7.2 earthquake.
Bohol and Cebu provinces of the Visayas islands suffered the deadliest earthquake recorded in 20 years.

Historical places were torned into many pieces which include the Loboc Church and the Basilica Minore de Sto. Nino. Approximately 69,000 houses were also destroyed by the quake. There are more than 300 death were counted after the shock.


Top 2 News of the Year: Typhoon Yolanda

Another meant to forget disaster is the Typhoon Yolanda. It costs more than five thousand lives. This is the deadliest and strongest typhoon ever hit land this year in the world.

This typhoon was worsened by politics of the national and local government. Word wars were also thrown out by Korina Sanchez and the netizens supporting Anderson Cooper.

There were millions of donations and pledges were given by the international communities to aid the Philippines.


Top 1 News of the Year: P10-Billion Pork Barrel Scam

Nothing beats the disaster brought by the discovery of the P10-Billion pork barrel scam that involves senators, congressmen and Janet Lim-Napoles.

Benhur Luy led the witness stand against Janet Lim-Napoles, politicians, and the government agencies involved in the most controversial malversation of funds in the history of the Philippine politics.


Janet Lim-Napoles and Benhur Luy went head to head with tirades and press releases to defend and accuse each other. Politicians involved made few to none statement regarding the matter.
